Do I have to give my details if stopped by the police?
You DO NOT have to give your name and address unless the officer points out an offence he / she suspects you have committed. However, not providing your details may lead to you being detained for longer.
Can you refuse to stop for the police?
Most of the time, you have the legal right to refuse to answer and just walk away. Usually, under ‘stop and account’, the police officer or PCSO doesn’t have the power to force you to stay. You can’t be searched or arrested just because you refuse to answer their questions.
Does a police officer have to give you their badge number UK?
A police officer is required to give their name, rank and station if you ask for that information. If you were being searched or the police officer first asked you for your name and address but then refused to provide his identity, he may be guilty of an offence and receive a fine.

This requires some evidence of an individual being, or being likely to be, offended by the language used.

Unless the police officer has reasonable grounds to believe you have committed a crime, are carrying a prohibited item, or are engaged in anti-social behaviour, they do not have the power to stop you. Even if you are stopped by police most of the time you have the legal right to refuse to answer and just walk away.
Can the police search your phone UK?
While the police do have the power to stop and question any member of the public at any time, you do not have to answer any questions if you do not feel comfortable doing so. This extends to the fact, under most circumstances, the police cannot stop you and make you unlock your phone so they can search it.
